"What a welcoming sight it must have provided for those brave souls who ventured forth to sail the seas. Its guiding beacon promised safety to all who withstood the winds, waves, storms and long periods of time at sea with no land in sight."

— Peter Ellenshaw

Built in 1716, the Boston Lighthouse stands at the entrance to the Boston Harbor. It is the earliest lighthouse built in the 'New World' and initially utilized candles and whale oil to provide the illumination. Severely damaged by the British during the American Revolution, the lighthouse was virtually rebuilt from the ground up in 1783. The restoration included a fourteen-foot addition, raising the tower to 89 feet tall.
